It has been three years since rumors first swirled that GFI Hospitality and GFI Development Company would be bringing a Brooklyn outpost of the popular Ace Hotel to 61 Bond Street (252 Schermerhorn Street). Building permits were filed that same year calling for a 13-story inn with 285 rooms. The parking lot site at the corner of Bond and Schermerhorn streets sat fallow for months as Downtown Brooklyn grew up around it. Work finally began last year only to be halted once a construction worker died after a piece of machinery broke off and hit him in the head.
Now work is pressing on and the project’s general contractor, Broadway Construction Group, has published our first look at the hotel to come. The developers have enlisted the lodging experts at Stonehill & Taylor as the architects and the revered Roman & Williams as designers. The rendering shows a robust mid-rise with lots of structural expression and multipane windows in between. A custom art installation will break up the building’s long expanse along Schermerhorn Street.
According to the floor schedule, the 180,000-square-foot building will have a bar, winter garden, restaurant, and retail space at ground level and several event spaces on the second floor. Suites begin on the third floor and floors 5-13 will have 29 rooms apiece. GFI’s website says this Bond Street project will be a “lifestyle hotel” and is slated to open in the Spring of 2018.
